Luke Combs took to the legendary Bluebird Café stage to sing his song, “Better Together,” at the 55th Academy of Country Music Awards on Wednesday, September 16 on CBS. Prior to the performance, Combs revealed that he wrote the song about his now-wife, Nicole, before they were even dating. The two were married in August in Florida.

“I know it’s been a crazy year for everybody, but there have been bright spots during all of it,” Combs said before his performance. “One of the biggest bright spots for me was getting married.”

After sharing the story of the song, Combs dove into the performance. In the song, Combs sings about various things that go well together, like “Barbed wire and old fence posts” and “8-point bucks in autumn.” He then extends that message to him and his wife in the chorus. This sweet sentiment was amplified in the performance, as the only instrumentation provided was a keyboard. The Bluebird Café’s string lights and red spotlight also contributed to the intimate nature of the song.

Combs’ rendition of “Better Together” was his second performance of the night. He also participated in the show’s opening number, which featured a medley from the Entertainer of the Year nominees. Combs is nominated in that category alongside Carrie Underwood, Eric Church, Luke Bryan and Thomas Rhett. He is also nominated for Male Artist of the Year and Album of the Year. Combs also put a spotlight on the Guitars for Vets program, which donates guitars to veterans.

The 55th Academy of Country Music Awards aired from Nashville, TN on Wednesday, September 16 on CBS after being postponed from their original date in April. The performances took place from the Grand Ole Opry House, the Bluebird Cafe and the Ryman Auditorium. Other performers include Carrie Underwood, Miranda Lambert, Dan + Shay and more.
