It was 25 years ago that Trisha Yearwood delivered her first single to us. That means there’s a whole generation of country music lovers that might not know that before she was Mrs. Garth Brooks, or the host of a successful cooking show and the writer of great cookbooks, she was a breathtaking female country star. And the glory of it is, she still is. On tour with her superstar hubs, one of the most magical moments of the evening—it’s usually met with thunderous applause—is when Ms. Yearwood takes the stage. New to the Trisha Train? Here’s a few “tracks” to get you onboard.

(Arranged chronologically)

“She’s In Love With the Boy” – from Trisha Yearwood
Written by Jon Ims
It was her first single and her first No. 1, and by most people’s standards, it’s her signature hit, but as sweet and fun as it is, we were not yet enlightened to the power of Trisha Yearwood’s voice.

“Like We Never Had a Broken Heart” – from Trisha Yearwood
Written by Pat Alger, Garth Brooks
Who would have guessed that 14 years after the release of this ballad of love and loss, the duet partners, Trisha and Garth, would tie the knot? Well, probably anyone that heard it! The chemistry is palpable.

“That’s What I Like About You” – from Trisha Yearwood
Written by Kevin Welch, John Hadley, Wally Wilson
Up to this point, we had seen the sweet Trisha and then the vulnerable Trisha, but with “That’s What I Like About You,” we saw the strong, empowered young woman that could melt faces when she wailed. It was the start of a beautiful relationship with her incredible voice.

“Wrong Side of Memphis” – from Hearts in Armor
Written by Gary Harrison, Matraca Berg
Trisha is a lifelong fan of Elvis Presley, so you might think the tune is a tribute to The King. And maybe, in one way, it is, but in another, it shows off her incredible aptitude for bluesy rhythms and vocals. She’s definitely a country star, but she shines with a groove, too.

“Walk Away Joe” – from Hearts in Armor
Written by Vince Melamed, Greg Barnhill
Just six singles in and we’ve now learned that Trisha has one of the most versatile voices in the format, which is why it was no surprise when this duet with the Eagles’ Don Henley was a smash. And the celebrity parade didn’t stop there. That’s Matthew McConaughey starring in the video.

“The Song Remembers When” – from The Song Remembers When
Written by Hugh Prestwood
It was poetry…a novel…a story of love and loss in less than four minutes, and when those picturesque lyrics met Trisha’s tender vocal, we were all along for the journey from “once upon a time” to “not so happily ever after.”

“XXXs and OOOs (An American Girl)” – from Thinkin’ About You
Written by Matraca Berg, Alice Randall
Not every “empowered female” anthem needs to be angry or forceful. The combination of Trisha’s voice with Matraca and Alice’s lyrics gave “XXXs and OOOs” an almost fun lilt, and who didn’t sing along at the top of their lungs when the chorus came along?

“In Another’s Eyes” – from Songbook: A Collection of Hits
Written by Garth Brooks, Bobby Wood, John Peppard
Temptation is mighty sensation, but we didn’t think you could actually hear it until Trisha and Garth collaborated again on “In Another’s Eyes.” The song aches with unrequited love and the empty acceptance that they’ll never know what might have been. You can almost hear a tear in their voices.

“I Would’ve Loved You Anyway” – from Inside Out
Written by Mary Danna, Troy Verges
No regrets. Don’t we all wish we could end a beautiful relationship and not regret it? With Trisha narrating the demise of that picture perfect match, it does seem a little more easy to cope with. At the very least, she gives us strength to remember that memories are sweet.

“Georgia Rain” – from Jasper County
Written by Ed Hill, Karyn Rochelle
Nostalgia never sounded as sweet as when Trisha lends her lovely voice to a song that recalls her own Georgia youth. She could be an ambassador for Jasper County with this beautiful tribute that was lyrically adjusted to accommodate Trisha’s roots.
