It’s not easy being the side piece, and Cam narrates the sorrowful back story of an accidental affair in her latest single, “Diane.”
Inspired by Dolly Parton’s famous infidelity tune, “Jolene,” Cam takes on the opposite role as the foolish woman who caused the adultery to happen. While the track may sound like a spiteful message, Cam delivers the harsh news with regretful emotions as though the title character of ‘Diane’ didn’t know the man she was falling for had a wife back at home.
In total Cam fashion, though, her storytelling abilities shine as the energetic track lets the secrets unfold line by line. Admitting that truth rises above all, Cam shows sympathy toward both women for getting caught in the middle of a romantic trap by their lover.
“‘Diane’ is my response to Dolly Parton’s ‘Jolene.’ It’s the apology so many spouses deserve, but never get. The other woman is coming forward to break the news to the wife about an affair, respecting her enough to have that hard conversation, once she realized he was married. Because everyone should be able to decide their own path in life, based on the truth. Women especially should do this for each other, since our self-worth can still be so wrapped up in our partners. And in true country fashion, I’ve set the whole raw story to upbeat music, so you can dance while you process it all,” Cam explained of the track.
Cam will bring “Diane” out to fans live on her Best Coast Tour, hitting West Coast cities starting in the end of November and into December. She also will help George Strait out as the opener for his Las Vegas residency before its final curtain call later this year.
At this time, there is no set release date for her sophomore record.
