Fans tuned in to American Idol on Sunday night (5/6) were treated to a special surprise when Carrie Underwood debuted her “Cry Pretty” music video at the conclusion of the show. The ABC reboot lead into the clip by revealing that she would mentor the final five contestants in Nashville ahead of next week’s show.

The emotional power ballad laid the perfect groundwork for a highly impassioned clip. Underwood is seen with many faces, between her public persona and the one behind-the-scenes. Putting on a brave face for fans or walking around town, the singer goes through the motions while keeping a brave face.

In contrast, when alone, emotions get the best of the powerhouse singer as she cries alone, playing on with the first verse of the song. “I’m sorry, but I’m just a girl / Not usually the kind to show my heart to the world / I’m pretty good at keeping it together / I hold my composure, for worse or for better,” she sings.

Underwood wrote the track with songwriters Liz RoseHillary Lindsey and Lori McKenna, also known as the Love Junkies.

“The title refers to when emotions take over and you just can’t hold them back. It really speaks to a lot of things that have happened in the past year and I hope when you hear it, you can relate those feelings to those times in your life. It’s emotional. It’s real. And it ROCKS,” Underwood wrote to her fans in a letter when the song debuted.

The Oklahoma native made the television debut of the track with a show-stopping performance on the 53rd Academy of Country Music Awards. The track appears as the lead single and title track of her upcoming studio album.l
