Chris Stapleton’s not one to record songs that he hasn’t written, but even he made an exception for a good ol’ Willie Nelson classic.

With his sophomore record on its way, Stapleton decided to release a cover of the Nelson hit, “Last Thing I Needed, First Thing This Morning,” out to fans. With such an anticipated buildup surrounding his next couple projects, Stapleton doesn’t let any of the hype get to him in the old-timey sound radiating throughout the track.

Making a vintage track modern with his emotionally raspy tone, Stapleton breaks hearts as he moves the slow song through its woeful ways. The country crooner delivers the right amount of vulnerability in his longing desire to cover up sadness within the song’s heart-rending words.

So excuse me for lookin’ / Like my world just ended / And excuse me for lookin’ / Like I just lost my best friend / And excuse me for livin’ / And being forgiving / So just go on if you want to be free,” Stapleton pleads in the cheerless chorus with no redemption coming to save the day.

Nelson originally made the song a popular one among listeners when he featured the track on his 1982 record, Always On My Mind. While there is nothing that compares to the original, Stapleton honors the gut-wrenching notion created by Nelson thanks to his articulate spin on the hit.

“Last Thing I Needed, First Thing This Morning” will be one of many songs on Stapleton’s second studio record, From a Room: Volume 1. The album will be released in full on May 5. Stapleton will then follow up that collection with another similar endeavor on From a Room: Volume 2, which will be released later this year.
