Clare Dunn Reveals Heartbreaking Truth Behind ‘Old Hat’
After a life-changing moment within her family, Dunn knew the only way to cope was getting her deep emotions out in a poignant song.
Clare Dunn showed strength through song in her most vulnerable moment as she revealed the emotional heartbreak behind her track, “Old Hat.”
The country star sends an ode to all of those who have lost a close loved one but still plan to keep their memory alive through their spirit and their most prized possessions. While Dunn may beautifully sing about the tearful moments, she herself has come face-to-face with a scare that left her not knowing if her father was going to make it through after a health scare.
“So I just sat there on my couch and sure enough, about 10 o’clock, I get a knock on my door. It’s a very dear friend of mine and I was like, ‘Why are you at my house? Like what!’ I open the door and I saw his face and I was like, ‘Oh my gosh. What has happened?’ I immediately just remember this feeling of panic ‘cause I just knew something was wrong and he said, ‘Clare, you need to call your mom,’” Dunn recounted the moment in an exclusive video clip.
Choking up over the dreaded thought that her dear dad wouldn’t make it through after a critical visit to the hospital, Dunn found comfort in music and a piece of his clothing sitting in her home: his trucker cap.
“I just was sitting there and I saw his old hat on my coffee table. And my mom had just given it to me a couple weeks prior, and I just remember thinking, ‘What am I gonna do if I lose my dad,’” she tearfully remembered.
Ultimately, Dunn hopes that “Old Hat” provides families or friends a sense of understanding and closure over the tragic passings of those we hold close to our hearts.
