Dan + Shay didn’t shy away from the hard stuff when it came to the making of their video for their current single, “How Not To.”

Directed by P. Tracy, the cinematic production focuses in on the lives of two alcoholics named Sophie and Noah who meet in one of their Alcoholics Anonymous classes after sharing their stories. Flashing back to the troubles that led them to the meetings in the first place, viewers see Sophie struggling to keep her job as she relies on water bottles of vodka to get her through and Noah becoming aggressive the more he drinks.

Fighting with significant others and family members alike, the two share the heart-wrenching vices of addiction until they flash-forward into the present day where they celebrate a year sober with each other among their loved ones. Thanking each other for the support to get through the miseries of withdrawal and recovery, their love connection brings them closer together for the sake of their health and well-being.

The end of the video then rewinds back to where it all started among the circle of chairs, where the characters meet and begin their helpful whirlwind romance.
