Kelsea Ballerini On Writing for Her New Album: ‘I’ve Never Dug So Deep’

"My life’s changed a lot in the last few years since I’ve put out The First Time and it’s been really cool to dig into that and write about it,” she said.

You never forget ‘The First Time,’ and Kelsea Ballerini wants to use the positive outlook from her debut album to find stronger inspiration for her sophomore release.

Over the past year, the country cutie has blown up all over the format and climbed her way to the top with pop-country hits like “Dibs” and “Peter Pan.” But once she entered the studio to come back around a second time with her music, she found herself lost for words on where to go next in her career.

“It was a lot of pressure, I think. But when I was feeling that, I was crippled by it and I wasn’t able to write or pick songs or anything, and finally I was like, ‘Make the record how you made the first one with no pressure and an album that you’re proud of, that you would listen to in your car.’ So that’s what I’m doing and I’m just hoping that it works again and it translates and connects,” Ballerini admitted to Sounds Like Nashville recently.

With her life-changing situations over the past year, including getting engaged and banking a GRAMMY nomination for Best New Artist, Ballerini found hope within the experiences she’s gone through to pull her out of her songwriting rut.

“As a songwriter, I’ve never dug so deep into myself in my emotions and my life’s changed a lot in the last few years since I’ve put out The First Time and it’s been really cool to dig into that and write about it,” she told SLN.

Ballerini will be attending the 59th Annual GRAMMY Awards as a nominee. The show will air live on Sunday, February 12, on CBS.
