Although Kenny Chesney planned his life around becoming a professional football player growing up, he has church to thank for introducing music into his life.

From a young age, the country singer remained loyal to his hometown’s trifecta of sports, church and education by being present in many different extracurricular activities involving the three interests. But it was music that captivated him within the pews of his local place of worship and gave him the insight that he could become a musician one day in his future.

“When I was a kid, music had such an impact on my life. I didn’t know I was going to be doing this for a living. I didn’t know it was going to be a life path because I wanted to be an athlete. I loved sports. I grew up in an area where sports was a big part of all of our lives. Church, sports and school was all we had and music. The first time I had music in my life was, like a lot of people, was in church. It’s where I heard a three-part harmony for the first time. It’s where I realized that music could have such a soulful emotional impact on someone. I think it’s totally possible to hear a piece of music without words and still be moved. The idea of that is so beautiful,” Chesney explained recently.

Changing his life for the better, Chesney attributes his time in the church for guiding him into the right career path of becoming a country singer. While he may no longer be singing hymns from a choir, he still reflects back onto the beginnings they brought him at a young age into his sound.

Chesney’s current single, “Bar at the End of the World” is playing on country radio now.
