Sparking attention from the headlines, fans, and the music industry alike, Little Big Town’s hit single, “Girl Crush,” was no ordinary song. From the start, the band took the track in and made it their own, but never forgot just how important the song was on so many levels.

“Girl Crush” was written by Liz Rose, Lori McKenna and Hillary Lindsey as an ode to the internal female jealousy one feels after she has been replaced by her former flame. While many radio outlets misinterpreted the true meaning behind the hit, others gave the song critical acclaim for its accurate depiction of the longing desperation.

Little Big Town decided to take on the task of performing the track and helped make the song what it became after trials of negative comments. The vocal group’s Kimberly Schlapman said that the band knew instantly that the song would be important in some way or another.

“We knew when we first heard the song that it was incredibly special. It literally took my breath. I gasped when I realized what this song was actually about,” Schlapman said.

Grateful for the Nashville songwriters that allowed them to record the hit, Little Big Town wanted to make them proud of the written masterpiece they created.

“These three women poured their heart and soul into an incredibly special once-in-a-lifetime song, and the fact that we were able to cut it is an incredible gift, and we will always be thankful to them for letting us do it,” said Schlapman.

“Girl Crush” is currently nominated for ACM Single Record of the Year and Video of the Year.

The group will perform on the 51st Annual Academy of Country Music Awards live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas this Sunday, where they have also been nominated for Vocal Group of the Year and Vocal Event of the Year with Miranda Lambert for their collaboration on, “Smokin’ and Drinkin’.”
