This week in 1988 Randy Travis held reign at the top of the country album charts with his record Always & Forever.

Always & Forever served as Travis’ second project following his 1986 debut, Storms of Life. This follow-up record was monumental in the country legend’s career, featuring the monster hit still found on country radio today, “Forever and Ever, Amen.” Also on the record are No. 1 singles “I Told You So,” “Too Gone Too Long” and “I Won’t Need You Anymore.”

“Forever and Ever, Amen” went on to win CMA Single of the Year, ACM Song of the Year and Single of the Year in addition to American Music Award Favorite Country Single. Always & Forever won CMA, ACM and AMA Country Album of the Year.

Following the ground-breaking project, Travis went on to have a prominent music career well into the 2000’s, including 19 more albums and a countless amount of singles, many of which made it toward the top of the charts.

Unfortunately, in 2013 the legend suffered from a massive stroke that halted his career. He was left unable to sing and had difficulty talking and walking. But after years of rehabilitation and therapy, he stunned the crowd in attendance for his 2016 Country Music Hall of Fame induction by performing a rendition of “Amazing Grace.”

Travis will be revered as a country music legend Always & Forever, Forever and Ever, Amen.
