Inspiration can come from a number of places for songwriters, and Tyler Hubbard from Florida Georgia Line found his light bulb moment in a time of despair thanks to his beautiful wife, Hayley.

After both Hubbard and collaborator Bebe Rexha walked away from scarring writing sessions, they serendipitously met up for their first hangout together. Not expecting much from the day, the two got to work after spilling on their previous work engagements and leaned toward the words of advice that Hayley suggested to her husband before taking on his next endeavor.

The rest was, well, history.

“The truth was, we were, me and Tyler were both having hard day that day because he had a session before and then somehow another artist canceled a session with them. I had a session that day and the writer I was working with was in a fight with her boyfriend. She was crying and I was trying to let her be human and not force her to write a song. She ran from the studio, I gave up on the day,” said Rexha during a press conference during CMA Fest.

Rexha went into more detail about what exact words Hayley used to boost Hubbard up, which resulted in the song’s main line and dominant title. Everything else fell into place from there, and turned into a pop-country sensation in a matter of weeks.

“Every time I don’t really want to go to the studio is when the magic happens because you gave up so you’re doing whatever feels right. Tyler told me that he had a rough day, so when he was in the elevator coming back down from dinner, his wife told him that, ‘If it’s meant to be it’ll be.’ Not knowing that they were pregnant at the same time. It’s crazy that all that happened. As the song started growing, they had a baby and now it’s just amazing,” Rexha explained.

It’s not out of the question if FGL and Rexha will cross professional paths again, but fans can hear the two artists work together on “Meant to Be.”
