The live shows of American Idol are just around the corner, so the judges narrowed down the competition to the Top 24 for the next round of performances.

Each of the final 50 singers got their last chance on stage to prove their worth in the special showcase performances. Having the upper hand by selecting their favorite songs to play, every person rose to the occasion for the couple minutes they earned to impress the panel. From pop artists taking on diva-style riffs to the wild energy from some classic rock, every auditioner made the short amount of time into a mini-concert to win a spot on the live shows.

A notable choice by Gabby Barrett came when she decided to defy the original piece of advice that the judges gave her during her first audition by singing “Church Bells” by Carrie Underwood. Although the performance hit a high note for Barrett, Katy Perry felt confused over her dedication to following Underwood so closely and gave her a no. Luckily, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie both stepped in to offer Barrett one of the Top 24 positions open.

Rejection hit hard, though, when Trevor Holmes tried his best on Niall Horan’s “Slow Hands” and didn’t live up to the potential. Although the judges bid him farewell, Perry clung onto the love she developed for Holmes in the very beginning and played up their faux relationship as his chances were shut down.

Layla Spring caught the eye of Bryan, who he dubbed as a “little star,” used the powerful force in her voice to take on “Proud Mary” by Tina Turner. Not disappointed whatsoever in the teenager’s performance, the judges handed her the first slot in the Top 24 with a lot to look forward to.

This season of American Idol will air new episodes on Sunday and Monday nights at 8 p.m. EST on ABC.
