Martina. Faith. Shania. These are the strong women who inspired April Kry to follow her dreams in becoming a country music artist. From a young age, Kry has always looked up to them to find her voice in country and now that she’s making a name for herself, she wants to honor them in her sound.

Her first step in following their footsteps: putting a song out that will celebrate women making their own decisions and being independent. After going to a writers’ camp in Nashville at Blackbird Studios, which just so happens to be owned by Martina McBride’s husband, Kry landed the perfect opportunity with a song that made a statement. With her upcoming single, “Get Ready to Miss Me,” on the horizon, Kry is ready to be bold in her ways and make it known that women are capable of everything and more.

“I told them I wanted a song that was super fun but also really empowering for women, so they were like, ‘Okay!’ That song kinda came out of me telling them that. When I first heard it, I was like, ‘Oh my gosh! This is exactly what I wanted!’ I just went in, cut the vocals and my label was just like, ‘Um, yeah…this is gonna be your single.’ I just think it’s so fun and so needed right now. In country radio, I just think we need to be empowering women and just letting them know that it’s ok if you feel like somebody isn’t respecting you to be like um, no, I’m not about that,” she explained to Sounds Like Nashville.

The next step down the modern 90s country path: imitation is the best form of flattery. The music video for “Get Ready to Miss Me” will not only channel the spirit of the great women from the 90s, but will bring back the blast from the past fashion of the most iconic videos.

“I’m super excited,” Kry said. “We’re doing like…so I told you my biggest inspirations were Faith, Martina and Shania, so what we’re doing for the video is recreating these different scenes from their iconic videos. It’s going to be so much fun. Actually, ‘Any Man of Mine’ kind of look. We’re doing like the mom jeans and all of that.”

Last thing on the list: release an EP, of course! Come fall, Kry will send out a group of her favorite recorded songs to fans because she wants to show listeners all of the different dimensions to her music.

“I have a lot of different feelings in all of the different songs. So ‘Get Ready to Miss Me’ is just super empowering and fun. Then I have this other song called ‘Heart Shaped Summer’ that talks about being in a really loving relationship and their first summer together, so it just goes back and forth like different inspirations. I just have a lot of different things to say,” Kry said.

Fans can be on the lookout for Kry’s single, “Get Ready to Miss Me,” to be released at the end of August.
