Tonight was the night we’ve all been anxiously awaiting… the night that Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani debuted their brand new duet, “Go Ahead and Break My Heart,” on NBC’s hit show The Voice.

“We’re a little bit nervous about it, but nervous in a way that we can’t wait and nervous in a way that we hope people think it’s as good as we think it is,” Shelton told People prior to the performance. “It’s like people getting a look at something personal for the first time.”

The two co-wrote the song together “about some serious insecurities that we had when we first started down this road with each other,” he explained. “We both had trust issues. We were getting over it, but we wrote this song about it, and it’s perfect.”

When the song was announced, the Oklahoma native admitted that it was one of the most favorite songs he’s had a part in writing.

“It came from a time and place when Gwen and I were beginning our journey together and both experiencing a hard time letting our guards down with each other,” he said when the track was announced. “The song couldn’t possibly be more honest. I’m honored to have written and performed this song with the great Gwen Stefani. Respect.”

The song appears on Shelton’s upcoming album, If I’m Honest, due out May 20. Fans who pre-order If I’m Honest now will receive an instant download of “Go Ahead and Break My Heart.”
