Shelton has been roasting Bryan for quite a few years, even as the two hosted the Academy of Country Music Awards together before Shelton stepped down after the 2015 show.

As the revival of American Idol comes to fruition, the reality singing competition has revealed the musical superstars guiding the hopefuls into what they hope will be long-lasting and successful careers. Joining the judges panel is country icon Luke Bryan, pop sensation Katy Perry and the legendary Lionel Richie.

While Bryan’s stint will be his first time as a full time judge, he’s had plenty of practice coaching young performers when he was a guest mentor for Blake Shelton’s team on The Voice. Shelton, unsurprisingly, had quite a few hilarious thoughts about seeing his longtime friend at the AI judges’ table.

“I think people are going to realize just how dumb he really is when they see him on national television, in an environment where there’s no script,” the Oklahoma native joked to Entertainment Tonight. “But you’re also gonna see what a great, great, dude that guy is. I love Luke like a brother, I really do, but he’s just dumb.”

Shelton also jested that he helped the “Light It Up” singer land his reported $13 million salary for the show.

“I’m sure the executives at ABC are really pissed at me right now for what they probably had to pay him to get him on that show. But good for you, Luke! Stick it to ‘em! I mean, Luke Bryan is not cheap. He looks it, but he’s not,” he added.

Shelton has been roasting Bryan for quite a few years, even as the two hosted the Academy of Country Music Awards together before Shelton stepped down as host after the 2015 show.

Fans can catch the “I’ll Name the Dogs” singer on The Voice Mondays and Tuesdays on NBC and Bryan on American Idol in early 2018 on ABC.
