On Saturday, August 25, it was revealed that Senator John McCain had passed away after a lengthy battle with glioblastoma, a form of brain cancer. With his passing, many people around the world took to Twitter to share their condolences with the family, among them, many of country’s biggest stars.

“We lost an American hero today. Thank you for your service to our country, and your bravery, Sen. McCain,” wrote Brad Paisley.

His online tribute wasn’t the only way Paisley honored the American war hero. During his Saturday night concert in Bristow, VA, the singer honored McCain with a touching performance of his 2005 hit, “When I Get Where I’m Going.”

After performing the song, Paisley tipped his hat to a photo of McCain projected on the screen behind him. The audience stood for an ovation, praising the memory of the senator and Paisley’s acknowledgement.

McCain passed away at the age of 81, just one day after announcing that he planned to forgo additional medical treatment for his cancer.

“With his usual strength of will, he has now chosen to discontinue medical treatment,” a statement from his family read on Friday, August 24. “Our family is immensely grateful for the support and kindness of all his caregivers over the last year, and for the continuing outpouring of concern and affection from John’s many friends and associates, and the many thousands of people who are keeping him in their prayers.”

McCain will lie in state at the Arizona State Capitol on Wednesday, August 29, his birthday. His body will then be transported to Washington, D.C. to lie in state at the Capitol Rotunda on Friday, August 31. Former Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama, as well as members of McCain’s family and others, will speak during a full-dress service on Saturday, September 1, in the National Cathedral. A private ceremony will be held on Sunday, September 2, at the U.S. Naval Academy Chapel in Annapolis, Maryland before McCain’s burial at the U.S. Naval Academy Cemetery. He will be buried next to his Naval Academy classmate and long-time friend, Admiral Chuck Larson.
