“I’d go out there work out with him about 30 minutes and he’d be out there for eight hours," Gilbert recalls of his days on the road with McGraw.

Making time for working out while on the road for a major country tour is pretty tough. Between traveling, sound check and the show itself, there’s hardly enough time left in the day to even look at weights. Somehow, artists like Tim McGraw and Kenny Chesney fit a strict pre-tour or on-tour workout regimen into their schedules, which makes Brantley Gilbert a little jealous.

Gilbert just hit the road for the summer leg of The Devil Don’t Sleep Tour, and although he sometimes can fit a weightlifting session into his day, he does not work out as much as he would like.

“I’ll be honest, not the way I should,” Gilbert admits. “I’m probably about to the age and the point in my life where I need to start dressing that up a little bit. But I’m not really that much of a cardio guy.”

A few years ago, McGraw brought Gilbert along for the Two Lanes of Freedom Tour where Gilbert got a firsthand look at McGraw’s dedication to working out.

“I’d go out there work out with him about 30 minutes and he’d be out there for eight hours! If you cut that man, Tim McGraw, if you cut him he’ll bleed chrome like dude on Terminator. I ain’t never seen nothing like that in my life,” Gilbert recalls.

Gilbert has some guns himself, but he does not think his muscles and endurance compare to McGraw’s or Chesney’s. He remembers watching with awe – and some fear – as McGraw was still going at it long after Gilbert had called it quits for the day.

“I’d watch them out the window and start sweating. I used to have nightmares about him knocking on my bus door and telling me it’s time to work out. I’m terrified of that sumbitch, him and Kenny [Chesney] both,” joked Gilbert.

Don’t miss Brantley Gilbert out on his headlining The Devil Don’t Sleep Tour this summer.
