On Tuesday (Aug. 9), Brett Eldredge gathered some of his closest friends in Nashville (and his puppy Edgar too!) to celebrate the success of his fifth No. 1 single, “Drunk On Your Love.”

Ross Copperman and I were writing a song and he had this tiny dog, I was so antsy that I would pick up the dog and put him on my head because he was so small and I’m a giant person. That was how it started,” Eldredge recalled with a chuckle to Sounds Like Nashville along with other media outlets during the celebration.

Though that story is true, a little bit more was involved in creating a tune that would continue on to hold reign at the top of country music radio airplay charts. The love-stricken track was actually penned well before it appeared on Eldredge’s sophomore album, Illinois, and even before he released his debut album back in 2012.

“We wrote this in a couple of hours and it stuck around for a long time. I let it pass over my first album. I wanted it to be on radio and I wanted to find the right time,” the country star continued. “We just got in the groove of this song that was like sometimes you chase down things when you don’t know where it’s going, we had no idea where this song was going. In fact, the demo of that song was so wacky and we were just like let’s let this song be what it is and we’ll figure it out later.”

“Drunk On Your Love” is the third No. 1 single Eldredge and Copperman have written together. So what’s the secret? Friendship. Eldredge says the artistry flows between the two of them due to their deep rooted friendship and their rare ability to connect on a creative level.

Well boys, whatever you’re doing, it sure seems to be working.

There was still one more secret that went into the making of this song’s success. Back when Eldredge was still planning out his sophomore record, one of his very famous friends, Tyler Hubbard of Florida Georgia Line, was getting married. As a dedication to the happy couple, Eldredge used “Drunk On Your Love” as a part of their wedding video.

“We ended up making a wedding video for Tyler Hubbard’s wedding and it went up on there,” Eldredge said. “It was still the demo and people started freaking out about the song on social media. And we were like dude, we gotta get this on the record now, this is the record to do it. We put the record out and next thing you know it’s our third No. 1 together.”
