Sometimes, the only way to go about leaving someone is running away to a clean break. Brett Young pleads for that swift rip of the heartstrings in his new video for “Mercy.”

The picturesque video sets the desert scene with Young alone at a piano, going through the good times in his mind and flashing back to the happy memories he made with his former flame. As he dulls out the pain with recollections of the past, the girl in his mind wanders around the sandy abyss. Catching glimpses of her own point of view, she seems to miss the moments just as much as Young.

Stranded out at the White Sands National Monument in New Mexico, the pristine dunes bring beauty to a broken situation. The moment Young looks his lost love in the eye at the end of the video, he realizes what compassion comes from separation in the first degree.

Letting director Seth Kupersmith take his creative eye to the emotional connection to the single, Young felt the rawness when he saw the video for the first time and hopes fans get the same reaction.

“‘Mercy’ is one of my favorite songs on the record, so it’s been really cool to see it come to life,” Young said in a press release about the video treatment. “My buddy Seth has always had such a creative and artistic brain – I got chills when I read his idea for this video for the first time. I’m really excited to share this one with fans!”

Although “Mercy” focuses on the tolls of calling it quits with a lover, Young has no qualms in the romance department since he just got engaged to his longtime girlfriend, Taylor Mills, after dating on and off for 10 years.

“Mercy” is the fourth single off Young’s debut self-titled record, which is available everywhere now.
