Carrie Underwood Admits ‘Dirty Laundry’ Has Changed Since Its Demo

I haven’t listened to the demo version in a long time so I bet if I went back and listened to it now, I’d be like ‘oh, my gosh, so much is different,' Underwood shares.

A song, from start to finish, goes through various changes and stages in order to perfect the track and make it worthy of airplay. Carrie Underwood’s new single, “Dirty Laundry,” went through a number of developments to finally find its place on her Storyteller album and make its way to country radio.

The evolution of the song came out of a simple recording of background vocals in the studio one day with Underwood and writer Hillary Lindsey, and progressed ever since then to become a revengeful tale of a sassy female who found herself stuck in a foolish relationship with a cheating man. But if someone asked Underwood how the tune took a turn, she’d admit to the fact that it wasn’t this spiteful number overnight.

“‘Dirty Laundry’ did evolve a bit in the recording process from the demo. Nowadays, we’re so lucky because we get demos, it’s so easy to make great music on your computer at home, and some of these writers and stuff are so, so, so good at making demos. There’s a wonderful template to work of, but I feel like a lot of the background vocals especially changed, because Hillary [Lindsey] and I just kinda got in there we were just playing around. We just kind of got in the studio, and we’re playing around with background vocals and it ended up sounding really cool, and haunting. I haven’t listened to the demo version in a long time so I bet if I went back and listened to it now, I’d be like ‘oh, my gosh, so much is different.’ But we had a lot of great stuff to work off initially,” Underwood explained recently.

While this could make fans want to hear the early stages of “Dirty Laundry,” they’ll just have to settle for the vindictive song they hear on the radio or during Underwood’s live shows.

Underwood is currently on the fall leg of her Storyteller Tour, which has dates scheduled until the end of November. For more information about the tour and purchasing tickets, fans can visit Underwood’s website.
