It’s no big secret that Carrie Underwood has her health and fitness goals on point. But one thing her fans may not realize is she’s not your typical gym rat getting her gains day in and day out.

Ever since becoming a mother, Underwood understands she may not always squeeze in enough free time from her busy schedule to hop on that treadmill for some intervals or practice deadlifts in the middle of the day. Thankfully, the country star makes the best of her motherly situation and focuses on fitness while still spending quality time with her little boy.

“Now it’s like, ‘Okay, I have 20 minutes. What can I do in 20 minutes?’” she said to People during a recent interview. “I can go run for a little while, I can go do some tabata rounds, I can do something. Sometimes I’m like, my workout today is going be running around after my kid. If we’re going to go to the park, why not run there and push him in the stroller? Then I get a good cardio session to and from, and then he gets to play, so everybody wins.”

When she does actually fit in a session during her day, Underwood thrives off the runner’s high and spills that she’s a sucker for some laid-back competition.

“I love just putting headphones in and going for a run. I feel so good when I get home, especially when it’s hot. I’m one of those weirdos that likes to run when it’s super-hot outside! Or classes. I find myself competing with other people in the room,” Underwood admitted.

At the end of the day, Underwood just wants to promote a healthy well-being to her family so she can use all of those energetic endorphins to get the job done, whether it be up on stage or a night in at home with her husband and son.

“It’s all about realizing why you do it,” she revealed. “I want to be a great mom and I want to be around for him for as long as I possibly can. I want to feel good about myself, I want to set that example for my child and make that a priority, because he’s watching. He’s a busy guy, so I need to keep my energy levels up to be able to play with him and chase him around.”

Currently, the “Church Bells” singer is taking some time to herself before heading back into the studio to work on her next project.
