Carrie Underwood Pays Tribute to Las Vegas Victims with CMA Awards Performance
A powerful moment, Underwood choked up herself as she sang the song's final lyrics and the photos of the country fans who died at the festival were displayed behind her.
Carrie Underwood had the most poignant performance of the 51st Annual CMA Awards on Wednesday evening when she honored the many lives lost in 2017. Singing the hymn “Softly and Tenderly Jesus Is Calling,” Underwood stood in the middle of the audience who surrounded her while holding candles.
The performance served as a vigil, paying homage to the 58 lives lost on Oct. 1 when a gunman open fired at Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas. A powerful moment, Underwood choked up herself as she sang the song’s final lyrics and the photos of the country fans who died at the festival were displayed behind her.
The moment also reflected on the many musicians we lost this year including Gregg Allman, Tom Petty, Glen Campbell, Don Williams, and Troy Gentry of Montgomery Gentry, among others. Underwood was assisted by light piano and string accompaniment, allowing her vocals to shine and make the already emotional song even more captivating. As the performance came to a close, the venue was left eerily silent, reflecting on all those we lost this year.
Underwood is co-hosting the CMA Awards for the 10th consecutive time with Brad Paisley.
