The 2017 CMT Awards Show opened up with an all-star tribute jam to the late Greg Allman featuring special guests Jason Aldean, Charles Kelley and Darius Rucker.

In a salute to the rockstar’s career, the three performed a rendition of The Allman Brothers Band’s 1970 hit “Midnight Rider.” The trio took turns on alternating choruses while Aldean provided the guitar. To make the performance even more sentimental, Derek Trucks, the guitarist for The Allman Brothers Band, held the spotlight for an out of this world guitar solo.

Allman passed away at the age of 69 after a battle with cancer. Aldean was one of the first country stars to react to his death, posting “This one hurts a lot. This was one of my heroes. RIP Gregg Allman…”

Aldean is up for Male Video of the Year as well as CMT Performance of the Year and Kelley is nominated along with Lady Antebellum for Group Video of the Year. Rucker is also nominated for CMT Performance of the Year.

Following tonight’s CMT broadcast, Aldean will be playing a free show in Nashville’s Walk of Fame Park. Music will begin at about 9:30 PM.
