Charles Kelley Debuts Solo Project, ‘The Driver’

"You can’t expect an artist to always want to do the same thing and be in the same environment," he told Sounds Like Nashville and other reporters. "To me, I think it’s kind of natural, this desire to want to put out a solo project."

Charles Kelley Debuts Solo Project, ‘The Driver’

Charles Kelley’s highly-anticipated debut solo project, The Driver, is finally out!

Since announcing the project, the Lady Antebellum front man has earned a GRAMMY nomination and planned a spring solo tour. And while fans worry about the state of Lady A, Kelley assures that there’s nothing to worry about and it’s only natural to take this step.

“You can’t expect an artist to always want to do the same thing and be in the same environment,” he told Sounds Like Nashville and other reporters. “To me, I think it’s kind of natural, this desire to want to put out a solo project.”

“I did do this because I just wanted to make music that I loved and not have the pressure of it,” he added. “I really do hope people hear it and it will hopefully lead to a little bit of a reinvention with Lady A. I hope so… or at least a reinvigoration. You know, we kind of had it last year and I think we’re starting to get there now.”

Before embarking on this journey, he got some advice from another artist who had gone through the same thing.

“I’ve got to connect the dots between Charles Kelley and Lady Antebellum. And I remember Darius Rucker telling me this. He’s like, ‘You gotta go out there as a brand new artist and really start fresh with it.’ And that’s what I’m kind of doing now and from the outside, I think everybody is kind of having to discover me.”

See what else Charles told us about the project, including cashing on a favor from Miranda Lambert in the video below.
