It may have seemed that Chris Janson rose to fame overnight with his smash hit, “Buy Me A Boat,” but the singer has been working hard as an artist and songwriter for nearly 10 years.

After a decade, the Missouri native was finally able to celebrate his success at his very first No.1 party, held at the BMI offices in Nashville, TN. “I moved here 10 years ago and was sleeping in the back of a two-door ’99 Monte Carlo,” Janson told the audience.

The song of the summer in 2015 has since changed his and his family’s life. “I mean, it’s changed the way we live and everything that goes along with it,” Janson told Sounds Like Nashville. “Touring is just, I mean, it’s crazy. I went from selling a couple hundred tickets to my last six shows were sold out. I mean, I’m incredibly grateful, man.”

His co-writer, Chris DuBois, told SLN that the song was never intended to be one for Janson as an artist. “Chris was a great artist at the time. He didn’t have a record deal, so we didn’t necessarily show up with the intent to write for him as an artist,” he told us. “We were just writing songs. There was something about that song with him singing it that there was never a doubt in my mind that he was going to be the one that recorded it.”

At the end of Janson’s heartfelt speech during the event, he said, “Thank you for letting it happen. Thank you, town. Thank you, Nashville,” before wiping away the tears.
