While Chris Stapleton has gone on the record in a few interviews that he created the songs on his successful album, Traveller, based on the music his father liked, he never really dove into the meaning of the title track.

Getting serious about the theme behind his hit, “Traveller,” Stapleton went to Jimmy Fallon to let fans know the real truth about the lyrics. Although many could assume that it’s about being a man on the road or a drifter finding home from place to place, it goes beyond anyone’s wildest imaginations: NBA referees.

“Well, the song, ‘Traveller,’ is about seeing life through the eyes of an NBA referee. You know, they see this kind of stuff all day long. This one’s for you guys. Oh, and for the people that work at Foot Locker, too,” he said during a video skit for The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

Pop artists Hailee Steinfeld and DNCE also shared their lyrical inspiration for their hits as well, but Stapleton’s response remained a proud moment for many country and basketball fans.

Jokes aside, Stapleton will be playing many shows throughout the year. His first stop is the Houston Rodeo in March, as well as Tortuga Music Festival in early April. He will also join Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers this summer for a couple special appearances during their 40th anniversary tour. Fans can find tickets for the shows through Stapleton’s website.
