Craig Morgan Remembers Late Son on One Year Anniversary of His Death

"It's hard to put into words how sad I am, yet at the same time, I want to celebrate and praise my Heavenly Father for His perfect plan for our lives. Jerry lost his life on the lake, so today, I'll be in the water, wishing he was with me but knowing he's with my Savior! To God be all the glory."

It’s been one long year since the body of Craig Morgan’s son Jerry Greer was found following a terrible boating accident. While the loss of a child is unfathomable, Morgan used the anniversary to spread a message of light and hope in the wake of his son’s passing.

“My daughter said it best July 10th .. It’s someone’s birthday, someone’s anniversary, someone’s celebration for a new job, someone found out they were having a baby, but for me and my family, it’s the day we lost Jerry Michael,” he wrote in an emotional post on Instagram. “It’s hard to put into words how sad I am, yet at the same time, I want to celebrate and praise my Heavenly Father for His perfect plan for our lives. Jerry lost his life on the lake, so today, I’ll be in the water, wishing he was with me but knowing he’s with my Savior! To God be all the glory.”

Attached to his words was a picture of his entire family celebrating Jerry’s high school graduation before his untimely death at the age of 19.

Jerry submerged underwater on July 10, 2016 after he and a friend were involved in a tubing accident on Kentucky Lake in Humphreys County, Tennessee. At the time, officials reported that he had been wearing a life jacket and it was unclear as to what prevented him from resurfacing after the crash.

“We are not sure yet why he did not resurface, although the jacket he was wearing was not Coast Guard approved,” a representative for the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency told PEOPLE at the time. “He was legal because of what he was doing and the operator had proper life jackets on board, but the jacket itself was one that many skiers and wave board users wear. As an agency, we prefer jackets that have the Coast Guard approval.”

After taking time off to mourn with his family, Craig Morgan once again set out on the road, showing his strength and carrying on as his son would’ve wanted him to do. He will soon be out on the road for his American Stories Tour, which kicks off Sept 29 in Hopewell, VA.
