It was only happy tears shed for Darius Rucker late Sunday afternoon as his beloved Gamecocks made school history.

March Madness has seen its heartbreaking losses and mind-blowing upsets this past year, but there is no other victory like the one that the University of South Carolina Gamecocks earned against the No. 4 seeded Florida Gators. Rucker and his son found themselves witnessing a huge feat for the men’s basketball team as they advanced into the Final Four for the first time ever.

Ready for this game!!! GO COCKS!!!!

Just as any Gamecock fan in the crowd that night, Rucker put his emotions on display as he cried when the buzzer went off and the SC team took the victory. As a native to the state and an alumnus to the university, the country singer could not believe what he witnessed at Madison Square Garden.

“If you’d have told me that 10 years ago, I’d have told you were on crack. Being the Garden for this made it even more special,” Rucker told Sports Illustrated after the game.

Not only did Rucker attend the University of South Carolina, he also formed his famous 90s rock band, Hootie and the Blowfish at the college. He also earned an honorary doctorate degree from the school in music in 2011.

Rucker’s current single, “If I Told You,” is playing on country radio now.
