Dierks Bentley brought the party to Music City on Wednesday evening (7/20) to celebrate the success of his smash hit, “Somewhere On a Beach,” which topped country radio airplay charts this past spring. This achievement marks the 14th time Bentley sat on the throne atop of the charts.

“When I got the song, I saw that title and it wasn’t something I necessarily would normally gravitate toward right away,” Bentley shared with Sounds Like Nashville and other media prior to the event. “But when I listened to it there was just some tangible quality about that song where it just all comes together in a way that sounds really fun and interesting and it had some edge to it.”

“Somewhere On a Beach,” which was the lead single off his most recent album Black, was penned by Michael Tyler, Jaron Boyer, Josh Mirenda, Alexander “Nezzo” Palmer and Dave Kuncio. The original concept for the song came about during a writer’s retreat at the beach where Tyler, Boyer and Mirenda were toying around with the idea. They paired it up with music from Palmer and Kunico, and voila, a future number one hit emerged.

“I’m not gonna lie, it feels pretty good,” Mirenda said. This track acts as not only Mirenda’s first No. 1, but also as his first cut on a record ever as a songwriter.

The songwriting troupe admitted that originally, the song started on a path that would traditionally lead toward the hip-hop genre. Tyler, who is also an artist signed to Reviver Records, also thought that it could possibly end up on his own record one day.

“We thought it was a Michael Tyler song,” the guys explained with a chuckle. “But when someone like Dierks says, ‘hey I’m serious about this being a single,’ we were like…’here you go!’ And it worked out as we can see.”

The 40-year-old country singer admitted that recording the track and making it a signature of his own wasn’t easy. Exploring a different style came with challenges for Bentley, but it appears it was worth all the hard work.

“I felt it was new territory for me as a singer. Just tackling that song was really challenging.” he explained. “Tapping into the new generation of songwriters, it’s so inspiring for me. We had a hard time thinking we would ever beat the demo.”

The beach track climbed the radio charts faster than any previous single Bentley has released. It quickly gained adoration from country fans all across the country and even won over the hearts of three people Bentley absolutely adores; his children.

“My kids sing along like crazy to the whole song, they always have,” he said with a smile taking over his face.

Bentley is currently on tour to promote his latest album alongside Cam and Randy Houser. And “Somewhere On a Beach” is a definite highlight of the show.

“It took us a while to make it mine, and it feels like mine now,” Bentley continued. “I can’t imagine my career without this song.”
