It wasn’t long ago that Cam released her response to Dolly Parton’s “Jolene” in a catchy number called “Diane.” The song was written from the point of view of the other woman (Jolene), apologizing for stealing time and love away from a doting wife (Diane).

“This is basically ‘Jolene’ in reverse,” Cam said of the song she penned with Jeff Bhasker and Tyler Johnson. “I’m the other woman and I’m coming forward and I’m saying to the wife, ‘The guy I’ve been seeing, I didn’t realize he was married. It turns out it’s your husband and I think you should know.’ It’s this whole really intense narrative that’s happening while it’s an upbeat song. It’s like great old school country where you’re dancing and then you’re like, ‘Oh, this is really dark shit!’ I’m so tickled with that. I really enjoy that part.”

Dolly met Diane. I will be framing this.

The song has earned praise from Cam’s peers alike, even from Parton herself, who sent a note to express how much she enjoyed listening to the track.

Parton’s praise wasn’t over, as she surprised the California native on Good Morning America before Cam hit the stage to sing. Baffled by the sweet video message she’d just received, Cam couldn’t help but become overwhelmed with the notion that her hero sent her a shout out.

“Oh my gosh! She’s huge! I mean, it’s like she’s… everything,” said the bubbly blonde. “She’s talented, she’s smart, she’s a huge icon for all women.”

After gathering herself and knowing her hero was watching along, Cam dazzled the studio audience and viewers at home, singing “Diane I promise I didn’t know he was your man / I would have noticed a gold wedding band, Diane / I’d rather you hate me than not understand.”
