When Sir Elton John personally rings you up to talk about your work, you know you’re doing something right.

Maren Morris recently went on the record to Today about the moment when the British music icon called her to let her know how big of a fan he was of her. Shocked and bombarded by the overwhelming love from one of her biggest idols, Morris couldn’t help but pinch herself to make sure she wasn’t dreaming as they chatted over the phone.

“I had two missed called from this South London number. I was like, ‘That’s weird.’ And my manager, Janet, texted me and she was like, ‘Elton John is trying to contact you!’ And he called me a third time and he was like, ‘Is this Maren? This is Elton.’ He said, ‘I’m a huge fan of what you’re doing and I have your record on vinyl and I just love what you’re doing.’ Just hearing that voice I’ve heard my entire life and I’m a fan of and so influenced by saying that to me over a phone call… and I had no witnesses to the phone call,” she chronicled to host Willie Geist.

Nevertheless, that memory was just one of many incredible times Morris has experienced throughout the whirlwind year of her career. From winning a GRAMMY and performing with some of her other heroes, the country star has handled her meteoric rise with grace and serenity even during a few huge moments.

“I was oddly relaxed that entire day,” Morris explained of her GRAMMY performance and acceptance. “Winning my first GRAMMY literally minutes before my performance with Alicia [Keys] calmed me down even more in a way that I’ve never really experienced with live television.”

Maren Morris currently rides along the 15 in a 30 Tour for the summer, hitting cities all across the country.
