“I’m always asked what song, if you could have ever written a song in the history of country music, what would it be? The answer is always easy for me. It’s always ‘Friends in Low Places,'" Lynch told SLN.

Forever Country Cover Series: Dustin Lynch Covers ‘Friends in Low Places’

If you’re a fan of country music, it’s safe to say that “Friends in Low Places” by Garth Brooks is one of the most iconic songs in the past couple decades of the genre. That’s why country singer Dustin Lynch decided to take a stab at the classic by covering it for the Forever Country Cover Series.

Artists from both the past and present have decided to honor the 50th anniversary of the CMA Awards by contributing their voices to covers of some of the greatest songs country music has created in the past five decades. Making the classics into their own original renditions, each artist is able to honor some of their favorite songs in a way that still makes it special to them personally.

Lynch set himself up with his acoustic guitar to take on “Friends in Low Places” and emphasized the witty lyrics to the hit as he crooned out the tune. For Lynch, being able to cover the well-known Brooks hit in not only the cover series, but also in some of his shows, has been one of his favorite things about his career. He looks at the song as one of the best written tracks out there and wishes he would have come up with it himself.

“I’m always asked what song, if you could have ever written a song in the history of country music, what would it be? The answer is always easy for me. It’s always ‘Friends in Low Places.’ It’s just a timeless classic. I still cover that song sometimes in my shows and I know for a fact there’s a lot of the younger generation that don’t even know who sang that song, but that’s how big I think the song is. It’s a timeless classic that as a songwriter, I know will continue to bring in the dollars. So that would be the one I would wanna write and it’s been an honor to perform,” Lynch told Sounds Like Nashville exclusively.

Brooks’ hit single, “Friends in Low Places,” has made a huge stamp on the world of country music as it has easily become one of the most popular songs in the genre to be covered live by a handful of talented musicians. The song won the CMA Award for Single of the Year back in 1991 and has not left the minds of fans everywhere as it still receives one of the biggest responses during Brooks’ live shows.
