Go Behind-The-Scenes of Rascal Flatts’ Song ‘Our Night to Shine’
Keeping in line with the Night to Shine event, the band invited participants from the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities to help with background vocals.
In just a few weeks, Rascal Flatts will release their 10th studio album Back To Us. Among the 10 songs on the project is a track co-penned by lead singer Gary LeVox called “Our Night to Shine.” The song has since become the anthem to the Tim Tebow Foundation’s “Night to Shine” experience, which brings proms to special needs students around the world.
LeVox penned the track with Chris DeStefano and Travis Hill after being inspired from last year’s event.
“Last year at Night to Shine, Timmy’s buddy said, ‘Dude, I’m telling you, you could just write something for this.’ I was like, ‘All right,’” LeVox told Sounds Like Nashville.
Knowing their inspiration, the three sat down and wrote the first two verses and the chorus, before putting the song aside for some time. As the year went on, the 2017 Night to Shine event was quickly approaching when LeVox suggested they pick the tune back up and put the finishing touches on it.
“I hadn’t told Tim anything about it, so I called DeStefano from the studio and was like, ‘Hey, Night to Shine is coming up. Let’s finish that thing,’ so I went over there, we wrote the bridge, then I put a vocal on it,” he explained. “Then, the next day, I brought it over to the studio and played it for the guys, and they just loved it.”

Having the kids take part in the song changed the entire dynamic of the song for the band. The track hit home for LeVox when he was able to attend this year’s Night to Shine event and share it with the attendees.
“We played just the demo for them, and they loved it. It’s their anthem and their theme. They all feel like they have such ownership in it like, ‘This is our night. This is our night,’” said LeVox. “It’s such an amazing thing, what Tim’s done over there.”
