Growing up and getting old means a lot of different things. Time causes change and sometimes, even the unexpected happens. Hunter Hayes, 25, never thought it’d be his voice that would decide to take a turn in another direction.

Throughout his time away from the spotlight in recent months, Hayes worked relentlessly to adjust his sound in order to match the vocal changes he began to experience. Just as any artist in the industry would, he took the initiative to let his voice be his guide to where his music would take him next.

“I’ve always worked with a vocal coach. I have since I moved to town because I have to take care of that instrument. I don’t get to change the strings when it goes out. Honestly, it’s just a responsibility to take care of myself. Just like going to a doctor, you do it when you don’t have to so that you don’t have to for something really major. Just trying to take care of that instrument and the vocal change that I went through, everybody goes through and to try to not look at it like this daunting task, but rather this is a road. This is the next road you turn onto to get to your destination. It’s just a part of the process and the experience,” Hayes explained to Sounds Like Nashville exclusively.

While Hayes experienced highs and lows throughout the process, he remained confident due to the overwhelming support he found through friends and colleagues alike.

“Luckily, I’m surrounded by people who know it really well, who can help me understand it and see it as not this monstrous undertaking, but as this really comfortable next step and embracing it and enjoying it,” he said. “And feeling comfortable in it, not just learning how to find the new voice or to work with it, but being comfortable. Feeling like I can walk on stage with a voice that I’m really comfortable and happy with. That’s important to me.”

Hayes has high hopes to release his next album within the year, with more details to come at a later date.
