If you’re familiar at all with the legend of the phoenix, you know that when the bird grows old, it bursts into flames and is then reborn from the ashes. Unfortunately, not many things have the ability to resurrect themselves from what they were before… that is, until American Idol.

According to Variety, producers of the long-standing reality competition show, that launched superstars like Carrie Underwood and Kelly Clarkson, are currently in talks with NBC for a revival of the show. While producers from FremantleMedia and NBC are tight-lipped, sources say that talks are ongoing.

The news is interesting in the fact that NBC is also home to The Voice, a direct competitor of American Idol. Variety hints that the network could cut The Voice back from two seasons a year to one as rating are not what they once were.

The renewal of Idol has always been a topic of discussion since it wrapped its 15th and “final” season in 2016, as host Ryan Seacrest signed off by saying “good night America… for now.”

Seacrest continued to churn a wave of suspense when he spoke at Television Critics Association winter press tour.

“When you’ve got a franchise that has this kind of heritage and you’ve got a franchise that generates X amount of millions of people, if it sustains, does that mean it’s the end?” Seacrest said (quote via Variety). “I’m not so sure.”

So could American Idol come back? While no one has any concrete answers yet, an announcement could be coming in the near future.
