Jake Owen Passed on Blake Shelton’s ‘She’s Got a Way With Words’

Blake Shelton was not the first artist to get his hands on the feisty track, "She's Got a Way With Words," according to Owen.

Despite his ups and downs over the past year, Jake Owen has managed to keep on chugging through the making of his new album, American Love. After it was announced that Owen and his now ex-wife Lacey Buchanan were splitting up in the summer of 2015, the “American Country Love Song” singer got an interesting song offer that struck a strange chord with him.

While Owen ended up releasing his single, “Real Life,” there was another track that’s now heard on country radio that he could have taken a chance on: Blake Shelton’s “She’s Got a Way With Words.” Rather than jump on board for the song though, Owen took the back seat and passed on the feisty tune.

“That was pitched to me, and I remember vividly the first time I heard that, I was like, ‘That’s a really good, cool song, very well written,’” Owen told Taste of Country. “’But if I record this song and I’m taken literally — I don’t want my ex to perceive I did that to her.’”

Instead of Owen taking on the track, Shelton made it his own for his latest album, If I’m Honest. With pointed lines like, “She put the her in hurt / She put the why in try / She put the S.O.B. in sober / She put the hang in hangover She put the ex in sex / She put the low in blow / She put a big F.U. in my future / Yeah, she’s got a way / She’s got a way with words,” it definitely made for speculation over his summer ’15 split as well.

Owen’s new album, American Love, is available for purchase now.
