It takes a strong person to speak about vulnerable topics in front of a crowd, but Jana Kramer worked up the courage to tell her own personal story while accepting an honor at Safe Horizon’s 22nd Annual Champion Awards.

The country singer, who recently revealed that she survived an abusive relationship from many years ago, was awarded with the Voice of Empowerment honor for speaking out against the issue. Kramer emotionally described the traumatic moments during her acceptance speech, in which she powered through her tears to discuss her moments of weakness in the broken marriage.

“I thought that if I shared my story, that people would view me as broken [so] I held it in for 14 years,” she tearfully said. “It kept getting worse, and I didn’t know how to get out. I thought that it was my fault because he truly blamed me for everything. I lost all my friends. I got dropped by every agent and manager in the business because I was doing terrible at auditions and I truly felt like I was stuck.”

After months of suffering in silence, Kramer looked to her late grandfather for a way out no matter what the circumstances of that opportunity may be.

“So I prayed to my grandpa and I said, ‘Please just take me away, because I don’t want to be this person.’ Because I was a girl full of light and full of energy and charm, and this man just broke me down to absolute nothing,” Kramer explained.

Years later, Kramer now feels empowered to talk about her situation in order to save the lives of so many others who are in the same position she was back as a teenager. As a mother of a little girl, she continues to fight against domestic abuse with her country music platform as a voice for those who need someone to connect with.

Kramer recently starred in a Hallmark movie, Love at First Bark, which can be seen on television now.
