It has been over a year since Jana Kramer released a single to country radio and that’s all about to change. The singer is giving fans a taste of new music with “I’ve Done Love.” A song that describes love as a drug she just can’t quit, Kramer says she related to the song the moment she heard it.

Written by Nicolle Galyon, Shane McAnally and Josh Osborne, “I’ve Done Love” was brought to Kramer after she opened up to Galyon one day over lunch. As Kramer recalls, she was headed into the studio later that afternoon and Galyon suggested the two grab a drink and catch up.

“We just started talking,” Kramer tells Sounds Like Nashville over the phone. “We had always been friends but we had never really gone deeper. I was telling her more about my life and things that I’d been through. We talked about domestic abuse, we talked about the relationships in her life and she said, ‘I want to send you this song. I think you’ll really connect to it.’ I heard it and I was like, ‘Oh my gosh! This is 100-percent me.’”

The first line of the song has a woman confessing that while she’s never been drunk and has never touched drugs, it doesn’t mean that she has never felt pain.

“Just ‘cause I don’t wake up with a bottle / And my blood don’t know the fire of cocaine / Just ‘cause my skin don’t know the sting of a needle / That don’t mean that I don’t know the pain,” Kramer sings.

Kramer herself says that while she’s never been drunk and has never touched a drug, her addiction of choice was always love. “That’s what I chose. Cocaine wasn’t my hit, love was my hit,” she confesses. “I connected to it so much because that was me. I’ve done some crazy things in love stone cold sober but love was the hardest drug of all.”

While Kramer admits that love has hurt her the deepest — having bravely spoken out about a previous abusive relationship earlier this year — despite the struggles and heartbreak she’s faced in the past, she still remains optimistic when it comes to love.

“I will always believe in love whether I continue to struggle with it or not. I love to love. Now that I have my daughter too, I have a whole new meaning of love,” she adds.

“I’ve Done Love” marks Kramer’s first-ever independent release. The singer parted ways with her former record label Warner Music Nashville earlier this year and says she can finally release the music that she loves and is most passionate about.

“Now I get to do it in my own way and I’m embracing that. I think my fans are going to appreciate that,” she says.

In the midst of letting her new single out into the world, Kramer currently splits her time between Los Angeles and Nashville. She’s also filming a new movie, meeting with labels and raising her 19-month-old daughter, Jolie. While she says it’s often a struggle juggling all the things in her life, her daughter remains her priority.

“Nashville is my home and now I’m trying to find the family along with that,” she says of searching for the right label for her new music. “Number one is obviously being a mom and everything else I’m just trying to support my girl and strike while the iron is hot.”
