One week after the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history, Jason Aldean has returned to the site of the massacre.

Aldean and his pregnant wife Brittany spent the day visiting survivors of the shooting, and took to Instagram to share details about their humbling visit.

“Feels surreal being back in Vegas today,” Brittany posted on Instagram, along with a photo of herself and Jason overlooking the Mandalay Bay hotel where Stephen Paddock opened fire on the Route 91 Harvest Festival just a week prior. “Visiting some of the strongest people we have ever met… fighting the toughest battle of them all… for their lives. You have helped us try to begin to start the healing process by seeing the strength each one of you have. Thank you for today. We will never forget.”

The couple’s visit comes the morning after Aldean made a surprise appearance on Saturday Night Live, opening the show with a moving speech.

“This week, we witnessed one of the worst tragedies in American History. Like everyone, I’m struggling to understand what happened that night and how to pick up the pieces and start to heal,” the Georgia native said. “So many people are hurting. There are children, parents, brothers, sisters, friends… they’re all part of our family. So I want to say to them, we hurt for you and we hurt with you, but you can be sure that we’re going to walk through these tough times together, every step of the way because when America is at its best, our bond and our spirit, it’s unbreakable.”

Aldean followed his speech with a performance of Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers’ “I Won’t Back Down.”

Paddock killed 58 people and injured hundreds while Aldean was on stage closing out the three-day festival on Sunday, Oct. 1. Law enforcement officials have worked tirelessly throughout the past week in an effort to learn more about Paddock and his motive. The gunman left few clues behind, leaving investigators puzzled as to why he would commit such a heinous act.
