"It went down within a week… and it ends up being the first single, so it's crazy how it works out," Aldean says.

Jason Aldean surprised fans last Friday (4/1) when he dropped a brand new single just two days before performing it on the 51st annual ACM Awards. The song, “Lights Come On,” is one that surprised the Georgia native just as much.

“It was a song that came in literally the last second for us,” the recently crowned ACM Entertainer of the Year told PEOPLE.

“We were done recording the album in the studio, finishing the album when the song came in, and we actually made some of the guys stay later so we could cut the song. It went down within a week… and it ends up being the first single, so it’s crazy how it works out.”

It’s the kind of song we love to play, for sure, and what people like to hear from us, and it’s been a while since we had one like this,” he added.

“Lights Come On” is the lead single from Aldean’s upcoming seventh studio album. The singer says fans should expect a combination of his albums Wide Open and My Kind of Party for the forthcoming project. “We have stuff on this record that’s really country and we have stuff like ‘Lights Come On’ that are really rock. To me, it’s just a really cool, well-rounded album.”

An album release date and title have not been announced yet.

The singer will take “Lights Come On” on the road for the remaining dates of his We Were Here Tour. See the last several dates HERE.
