The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, or so John Mayer says in his first jump into country music with his track, “In the Blood.”

Acknowledging the concept of ‘like father, like son,’ Mayer comes to grips with the idea that he will shadow his parents’ habits and traits the more time passes by. The musician battles back and forth between the pressure to follow just as his elders did or to wipe the slate clean for his own life to live.

Mayer fights this feeling hard by dissecting each element of his family from his mom to his dad and even his brothers. The relatable lyrics like, “How much of my mother has my mother left in me? / How much of my love will be insane to some degree? / And what about this feeling that I’m never good enough? / Will it wash out in the water, or is it always in the blood,” hit home pretty hard with Mayer during his journey of self-discovery throughout the mellow tune.

While this is Mayer’s first radio release to country music, it isn’t the first time the rock musician has tested the waters in the format. He tied in former girlfriend and country star Taylor Swift as harmonies on his 2009 hit, “Half Of My Heart,” as well as shredded on the guitar alongside pal Keith Urban for a CMT Crossroads collaboration.

Mayer will be hitting the road throughout the summer to perform some of his old classics as well as a few new songs off his latest project, The Search for Everything.
