Kacey Musgraves Dwells Upon Loneliness in the ‘Space Cowboy’ Video

Optimism does come to life, though, in the form of a beautiful butterfly inspiring Musgraves to move forward and find love in the future during the treatment.

In Kacey Musgraves’ defense, distance does not make the heart grow fonder in her video for the track, “Space Cowboy.”

Sat alone in a vintage house throughout many situations, Musgraves longs for the attention and love she deserves as the man of her so-called dreams spends his time riding away from the sadness. Heartbreak echoes throughout the empty space filling the home and Musgraves’ heart in the treatment, but doesn’t stop her from realizing the cold truth of a lost love.

The smoky backgrounds blend together with the ink-blot sky to create an imaginative world similar to the dreamy sound of the song, but blurs the elements of wonder just enough to make a somber mood for the majority of the video.

Vulnerability really plays a key factor in the concept as well, with scenes of showing Musgraves tucked away in a bathtub and holding herself alone in her bedroom. Thankfully, optimism comes to the forefront toward the end of the almost four-minute clip when Musgraves admires the beauty of a butterfly on her hand. Representing the next phase in her outlook on love, the insect flies off into the distance and sheds light onto Musgraves in a metaphorical sense.

The song, “Space Cowboy,” really reflects on the growth that Musgraves has overcome in her own life, from leaving a relationship to blossoming within a new one with her husband, Ruston Kelly. Bringing “Space Cowboy” to life took more effort after finding happiness, but the singer knew the track remained an important staple in the makeup of Golden Hour.

“It’s a look into where I’ve been, and where I am now. I like that it’s very sparse. And it’s just about making peace with a door closing in your life. I feel like everyone can relate to that. When you’re just like, ‘I don’t understand this. It hurts right now.’ But it allows something better to come in,” Musgraves previously said to CMT.

“Space Cowboy” is one of the tracks from Musgraves’ most recent release, Golden Hour, which is available now.
