It sounds like Kane Brown is making some bold moves on his next album. At the celebration honoring his first No. 1 single, “What Ifs,” Brown offers Sounds Like Nashville and other media an idea of what he’s working on when it comes to new music.

Brown has seen significant growth as an artist since his days as a social media star, particularly when it comes to songwriting. What once felt like an obligation for Brown is now a craft he finds great joy in. “Honestly, I did not like writing,” he says about his feelings toward the task during his early days in Nashville. “When I first started, I didn’t really know where I wanted to go, I didn’t know what path I wanted to go down. I had different people telling me what I could and what I couldn’t do.”

Now that he’s found his own path, Brown revels in the art of writing, viewing it s a special opportunity to tell his story. “Then I started having fun with it and not looking at it as a job, but looking at it more as you have the opportunity,” Brown says, who’s now writing “as much as possible.” “My whole life’s changed just with how much fun I’ve had. I’ve just been writing a lot, getting ready for the next album.”

The singer reveals that he’s aiming for a new target when it comes to his second studio album, attempting to create a sound that diverges from the norm to create something truly all his own. “It’s a very different writing process. I’m trying to make it sound something that’s not even close to anything in Nashville. It’s kind of got an R&B feel, but [producer] Dan Huff is so good at bringing it and making it country,” he describes. “It’s a different strategy, but it’s going to either be a hit or miss.”

Brown’s sophomore project will follow his groundbreaking self-titled debut album that’s certified gold and earned him the largest country debut for a new artist since the release of Sam Hunt’s Montevallo. He’s currently on Chris Young’s 2018 Losing Sleep World Tour that’s been extended through the fall.
