With the return of American Idol comes the great hunt of finding the perfect panel of celebrity judges.

Rumors began swirling over the possibility that pop star Katy Perry would lend her talents to the judges’ table for the revamped series, and they turned out to be true this time around as she has officially been confirmed to join on the reboot.

Although Perry has never maintained a television role within the reality competition world, she can back on a bit of experience from a brief appearance on the U.K. version of The X Factor many years ago in which she helped Simon Cowell and the fellow judges seek out One Direction’s Niall Horan from the crowd of contestants.

“I am honored and thrilled to be the first judge bringing back the American Idol tradition of making dreams come true for incredible talents with authentic personalities and real stories,” said Perry in a statement. “I’m always listening to new music, and love discovering diamonds in the rough – from mentoring young artists on my label, or highlighting new artists on my tours, I want to bring it back to the music.”

ABC Entertainment President Channing Dungey added, “We are thrilled to be ushering in this new era of American Idol with Katy leading the charge. Her incredible accolades speak for themselves. We are so lucky to have this strong and talented woman help inspire and guide the next crop of artists as they pursue their dreams.”

After ABC confirmed recently that the hit reality television competition series would be returning to the small screen schedule, fans of the show began speculating who would fill the chairs left behind by so many iconic judges. Cowell went on the record to say he wouldn’t come back to the show, and many details were left up in the air regarding if names like Keith Urban or Carrie Underwood would accept offers to work on the new AI.

Many other devoted followers of the show have started to stir up the possibility of Ryan Seacrest revising his role as the show’s emcee. Seacrest most recently accepted a job as the co-host for Live! With Kelly in New York City, so it is unsure if he will be able to join due to the bi-coastal conflicts. Dungey went on the record on Tuesday to let critics know that ABC plans to make their renewal of the hit into a brand new phenomenon while still honoring its beginnings.

“This is going to be ABC’s version of ‘American Idol,’ so we are very excited. I think you guys will see when we unveil our version of the show that it is going to have a very clear ABC hallmark and brand on it at that point,” she explained.

AI alumni Kelly Clarkson and Jennifer Hudson will definitely not be making any stops by the reboot as they signed on to future seasons of NBC’s The Voice respectively.

American Idol is set to re-air at the beginning of 2018.
