Keith Urban and Carrie Underwood prove that teamwork makes the dream work time and time again with their dynamic live performance of “The Fighter” at the 2017 CMT Music Awards.

The duo shook things up for this performance by opting for a stripped down version that featured Urban and Underwood in their own spotlights as they gradually moved toward each other. This unique rendition showcased Underwood’s vocal range and the pair’s chemistry was undeniable.

As the performance continued, the song finished in an upbeat explosion that many were expecting. Underwood’s last note of the tune blew the roof off the building, putting the cherry on top of an already outstanding showing.

The song itself was born out of inspiration from Urban’s personal relationship with his wife, Nicole Kidman, and their happy beginnings. Although doubts arose like any new partnerships, Urban wanted to love Kidman for the long haul and vowed to be there for her through thick and thin.

“It was just a very quick song to write. I literally just thought about Nic and I and our relationship at the beginning and some of the things that we’d said and that were born into that song,” Urban told Sounds Like Nashville and other media at a previous press event.

The 2017 CMT Music Awards is broadcasting live from downtown Nashville tonight on CMT.
