This year, The Recording Academy has chosen to honor country superstar Keith Urban with the Recording Artists’ Coalition Award for his years of devotion to the furthering and fostering of music education at the upcoming GRAMMYs on The Hill ceremony. The accolade is something Urban doesn’t take for granted.

“For me, it’s an opportunity to bring attention to something like music education programs, which is something I’m passionate about,” Urban told Sounds Like Nashville and other media recently. “So it’s an honor first and foremost, and secondly, a chance to bring attention to a lot of that that’s going on.”

“The Fighter” singer hopes that legislators and schools trying to defund music education will at least pause to consider the repercussions of removing the creative outlet from the hands of students everywhere before actually acting on it.

“There’s so many people actually working on this constantly, trying to make sure that that’s not something that’s discarded out of school curriculums so effortlessly,” he continued. “It’s a broad conversation, I never want to say you can’t do that, but what I’m asking is for it to be part of the conversation when schools are looking at what they can do away with. At least pause and consider that this is something more than just a frivolous activity on the proof read.”

The GRAMMYs on the Hill Awards will take place at the Hamilton Live on April 5 and will include several live performances and surprises. The event will also recognize legislators who have advocated for music creators rights.
