As Keith Urban was in the process of making his latest record, Ripcord, he mixed a number of musical influences into each song for a more dynamic flavor overall. One of the tracks, “Blue Ain’t Your Color,” spun Urban for a loop in a good way by adding a waltz flair to his already bold album.

In a new video clip posted on Urban’s YouTube channel, he gives fans the behind-the-scenes look on the making of the track. From the note scales to the studio layout, fans gets to see what goes into the production of a track like “Blue Ain’t Your Color.”

While Urban didn’t write the song, he felt a connection to it like no other and knew he had to put it on Ripcord because of its unique tone and title.

“There’s a few songs on the record I didn’t write,” he explains in the video. “I got sent a lot of songs and I got sent this one song called ‘Blue Ain’t Your Color,’ that I loved the title first of all. Obviously, the song just hit me. Lyrically, melodically, it was not like anything I’d cut before.”

Urban also knew the difficulty going into the song because it was so different from his previous catalogue of work. But he wanted to do the song justice and that he did with the help of a good group of musicians and an innovative team of producers.

“Matt programmed this cool, simple drum loop and that became really the rhythmic binds of the song instead of the traditional drums. And I think it was for me, by having that programmed machinery under that kind of song, it just kind of yinned the yang enough for it to feel inspiring for me,” Urban says.

The seductive bluesy track is just another element on Urban’s Ripcord that perks the listener’s ear up to new sounds from the country singer. Right now, Urban has taken that record and more out on the road with him this summer alongside tour mates Maren Morris and Brett Eldredge on the ripCORD Tour.
