Kelsea Ballerini and Morgan Evans brought their love story full circle by taking a shot of tequila after saying their wedding vows on the beach in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

The couple, who met in Australia during a co-hosting gig in March of 2016, wanted to honor the moment they first realized they had eyes for each other. So after exchanging vows, they sipped on tequila with their 100 guests, including Lady Antebellum’s Charles Kelley.

“When they announced us as husband and wife, we’re passing out tequila shots for everyone because that’s how we started! I mean that is literally, I remember taking that shot and putting it down and looking at him and being like, ‘Oh hey,’” Ballerini admitted to People of the couple’s very first kiss.

Throughout the entire wedding weekend, Ballerini and Evans made sure they didn’t fall under the typical wedding category by opting for unconventional choices at their reception. Playing on the Mexican destination, they offered guests a buffet of tacos and churros with pineapple Mezcal cocktails to turn up the heat a notch. They also flaunted their love of flavored cakes with tiers of carrot, red velvet and white ready for friends and family to take a bite.

It wouldn’t be a wedding between two singer/songwriters without original vows. Evans revealed that Ballerini’s promises were “poetic” and “sweet” and spilled that he cried as he exchanged some lyrics to a song he wrote for his dream girl during his speech.

The one detail they managed to make more mainstream ended up on their first dance song choice, with the selection of Christina Perri’s “A Thousand Years.” They mutually adored the romantic ode and knew from the first time they played it while hanging out together that it meant the most to them above all other tunes.

“The reason we picked it [“A Thousand Years”] was ‘cause I had this little balcony at this little apartment I was in at the time, and we were out there having dinner and we were like, ‘Let’s play our favorite love song,’” Ballerini explained. “It ended with ‘A Thousand Years’ and I think it was kind of our way really early on to be like, ‘I think I love you.’”

Ballerini and Evans wed on Saturday, December 2, and will celebrate the holidays as husband and wife surrounded by their families.
