Nothing compares to the feeling of waking up to the news that you’ve been nominated for your first GRAMMY. Kelsea Ballerini now knows the moment all too well as she experienced her ‘first time’ with a nomination in the Best New Artist category for the 2017 GRAMMY Awards.

The country cutie got the news right at the crack of dawn and couldn’t contain her excitement via numerous text messages from friends and family alike.

“I was in bed! I was in bed and my phone was blowing up and I thought it was my alarm, then it wasn’t. [My reaction was] probably like I’m gonna either cry or throw up,” she told Sounds Like Nashville exclusively at a recent press event.

Joining alongside Ballerini in the Best New Artist hat is fellow country singer, Maren Morris, and the two both wished each other good luck and congratulations like the true friends they are within the country music community.

“You know what? One of the first messages I got was from Maren [Morris], which was really cool just because I don’t think there’s ever been two country artists in the New Artist category at the GRAMMYs before. So to be able to do that with her…and two girls too! Come on, I’m stoked about it,” Ballerini said, admitting that she responded back with a proposition to show up in “big hair and sparkles!”

Not only did Ballerini humbly acknowledge her big accomplishment with grace, she also looked upon the category with great honor that she is in the same ring with artists she loves outside of the country format.

“Chainsmokers? I mean, how crazy is that! I’ve always thought country music was cool, but just to be able to represent country music with Maren and in an all-genre category at the Grammys…I mean, that makes me feel cooler than I’ve ever felt,” explained Ballerini to SLN and other media.

The 59th Annual GRAMMY Awards, hosted by James Corden, will air live on Sunday, February 12, on CBS.
